World Lung Cancer
Day is observed to be on the 1st of August every year. The main idea
behind this day is to create awareness among Public as to What Lung
Cancer is? , What are its Symptoms?, etc.So, here we go on our part…
Lung cancer continues to be one of the most regular cancers globally, claiming more lives every year than prostate, breast and Colon
cancers combined. It is calculated that lung cancer values for nearly
one in five cancer deaths around the World. Lung cancer was a rare
disease in beginning of the 20th century, but its incidence has
progressively increased with increased smoking. The lung cancers account
for 12.8% of cancer cases and 17.8% of deaths from cancer worldwide.
But, Lung cancer is an entirely preventable disease. The elements that
play a role in cancer development includes tobacco product, industrial
products like uranium, radiation, asbestos, etc, air pollution and
nutritional insufficiencies. Recent studies have shown that the critical
factor boosting the risk of lung cancer includes long-term respiration
of carcinogenic substances.
Symptoms of Lung Cancer:
As
usual, Lung Cancer too does not show any early signs and symptoms but
the following symptoms may occur as the disease starts to progress.
Symptoms include:
- A new cough that doesn’t go away
- Coughing up blood, even a small amount
- Shortness of breath
- Chest pain
- Hoarseness
- Losing weight without trying
- Bone pain
- Headache
How smoking affect Lungs?
When
a person inhales cigarette smoke, which is full of carcinogens, changes
begin to occur immediately in the lung tissues. At first our body may
be able to repair this damage. But with each repeated exposure, normal
cells that line our lungs are increasingly damaged. This damage causes
the cells to act abnormally and eventually leads to the development of
cancer.
The general types of Lung Cancers include:
- Small cell lung cancer: Small cell lung cancer occurs almost exclusively in heavy smokers and is less common than non-small cell lung cancer.
- Non-small cell lung cancer: Non-small cell lung cancer is an umbrella term for several types of lung cancers that behave in a similar way. Non-small cell lung cancers include squamous cell carcinoma, adenocarcinoma and large cell carcinoma.
The Cancer can be prevented to some extent even though not for sure, by following certain practices:
- Avoid Smoking
- Avoid Second Hand Smoke
- Avoiding Carcinogens
- Regular Excercise
- Eating a balanced diet (diet rich with fruits and vegetables)
